shops in London

Why London is one of the Best Cities in the World for Shopping

London consistently ranks among the world’s top destinations for retail, combining historic luxury, global fashion houses, iconic department stores and vibrant street markets all within one city.

Is London a good city for shopping?

London is widely considered one of the world’s top ten cities for high-end retail, according to upscale travel and concierge service Lartisien. It is one of just four global fashion capitals alongside Paris, Milan and New York, and is home to flagship stores from internationally recognised designers including Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen.

The city also hosts London Fashion Week, which takes place twice a year. The next edition, covering spring and summer 2027 collections, runs from 17 to 21 September 2026.

What are the best shopping areas in London?

London’s retail offer spans everything from luxury boutiques to independent markets. The key areas to know:

  • Oxford Street stretches for one and a half miles from Hyde Park to Tottenham Court Road and contains more than 300 outlets, making it the city’s most comprehensive shopping thoroughfare
  • Bond Street is one of the world’s most exclusive retail destinations, known for designer and luxury brands
  • Regent Street combines flagship stores and high-end fashion labels such as Burberry with popular retailers including Apple and Uniqlo, set along elegant period architecture
  • Savile Row is globally renowned for bespoke tailoring and high-end suiting
  • Chelsea and the King’s Road offer a blend of boutiques, independent traders, international fashion houses and British brands across almost two miles from Sloane Square
  • Harrods and Liberty are landmark department stores that draw visitors in their own right
  • The Royal Exchange is a destination for luxury purchases and dining
  • Covent Garden, South Kensington and Camden offer more eclectic and market-led shopping experiences

When are the best times to shop in London for sales and discounts?

London’s main sales periods are:

  • Winter sales: begin on 26 December and run through January
  • Summer sales: late June through to August
  • Black Friday: the last Friday in November, with significant discounts across fashion and electronics

Popular items and sizes sell out quickly during these periods, so an early start is advised.

Where should you stay when visiting London to shop?

A centrally located serviced apartment is one of the most practical options for a London shopping trip, whether you are visiting solo, as a couple or as a group. The main advantages over a hotel include:

  • More space to store, try on and pack new purchases
  • A fully equipped kitchen so you can eat in, order a takeaway or dine out on your own schedule
  • On-site laundry, which is particularly useful if you are taking new clothes home
  • Better overall value, especially for longer stays or groups travelling together
  • Proximity to central retail districts, evening entertainment, theatres, restaurants and cultural attractions
