Where to stay for Wimbledon: The Complete Guide

The 2026 Wimbledon Championships run from 29 June to 12 July, giving you a clear window to plan accommodation. Here is everything you need to know.

What is Wimbledon and when does it take place?

The Wimbledon Championships are the world’s oldest and most prestigious tennis Grand Slam, first held in 1877. It takes place annually in late June and early July at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in SW19, south-west London. The two-week tournament is the only Grand Slam played on grass and includes men’s and women’s singles and doubles, plus wheelchair events. Alongside Royal Ascot, the Henley Regatta and the Chelsea Flower Show, it forms a core part of the British summer season.

Where should you stay for Wimbledon?

Central London is the best base for Wimbledon visitors. While staying in the SW19 area might seem logical, it is not the most practical or cost-effective option. Accommodation prices in Wimbledon itself can double or triple during the Championships, with some rentals requiring a minimum 14-night booking. Hotels in the area typically sell out entirely.

By contrast, a central London location gives you:

  • Easy access to the All England Club via the District line (30 to 45 minutes from most central zones)
  • Greater choice of restaurants, theatres, shops and cultural attractions
  • More flexibility to travel around the city without long journeys
  • Lower and more stable accommodation rates

The grounds are reachable via the District line to Wimbledon station, with buses and taxis running directly to the club. As play does not begin until lunchtime each day, there is no need to be close by early in the morning.

How much do hotels near Wimbledon cost during the Championships?

Accommodation prices near the All England Club rise sharply during the tournament. On the first and second Mondays of the Championships, hotel rates in SW19 increase by more than 100%. Short-term rentals in the area rise by at least 30%, and many require a minimum two-week stay.

Is a serviced apartment a good option for Wimbledon?

Yes, a central London serviced apartment is one of the most practical and cost-effective options for Wimbledon visitors, particularly for families, small groups or those attending across multiple days. Key advantages include:

  • More space than a hotel room at a comparable or lower cost per night
  • A fully equipped kitchen, giving you the flexibility to cook at home, dine out or order in
  • No fixed meal times or check-in restrictions
  • Laundry facilities and reliable Wi-Fi are standard
  • 24/7 housekeeping and concierge support
  • Freedom to entertain guests in your own space

Rates for serviced apartments often become more competitive for extended stays, making them well-suited to the Wimbledon fortnight.
